in clarinet there's definetely a feeling to (Sib, Bb) that makes it really sad, specially in sib3, in my opinion if you played sib minor specially between sib2 and sib3, this would sound the saddest, unfortunately in piano theres no such difference

I feel like the underlining emotional connection between Bach's second suite is the climbs that the instrument makes imitates someone reminiscing on good times, and then falls back down to the realization that those times are over. idk my teacher always stresses that baroque music had storylines in the music a lot more than pieces do today.

Ok. I feel like I have to say this. D minor, for me at least, is NOT the saddest key at all. It's one of the happier minor keys. Personally, I think different keys feel hotter or colder to the ear. I'm gonna list these minors out: (All of this is my opinion)\n\nA - Pretty average, in my opinion the happiest minor.\nE - Slightly hotter than A, but also sadder.\nB - Even hotter than E, starting to bring out a feeling of anger.\nF# - Hotter than B, anger turns to sadness.\nC# - Hotter and darker than F#, also more dramatic.\nG# - Darker than C#, getting into more of a depression type sadness.\nEb - The darkest key imo; not as sad, but darker.\nNow the other way around the circle:\nD - Colder than A, but also quite empowering and strong.\nG - Very bittersweet key, darker than D and sadder.\nC - Dramatic, and cold. Can be aggressive but also be sad. Not quite as sad as G.\nF - Coldest key, has quite a sad tone it it. Darker than C.\nBb - Not as cold as F, but colder than C and nearly as dark as G#. Darker than F.\n\nThe saddest minors are F, G, C# and F#. C and G# are followed. Then Eb and Bb. Then D. Then B. Then E. Lastly, A.\nHowever, I feel like you can get sadder. This is by going quarter tones in between these keys. The saddest of these are:\nF-F#, F#-G and C-C#.\n\nI think this association of keys to temperatures might be similar to synesthesia, but I'm not sure.

Just when I was beginning to think you knew what you were talking about you go and completely miss the boat on temperaments! Keyboard tunings in Europe did not change from 1/4 comma Meantone to equal temperament. Sometime in the 1600's meantone fell out of favor and well temperaments became the general standard. See J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier for one example of a composer writing for a well temperament. In these temperaments, different keys did have a \

As someone with perfect pitch i thought i'd offer my own two cents. To me, yes, each key does sound slightly different and have its own character. E minor for instance can either sound a little aggressive because i always link it to metal songs or absurdly jovial (think seinfeld. Lots of pop songs that should be in a major key considering how sprightly they are are in this key too.). Bb major always sounds quite patriotic, presumably because, as you mentioned, patriotic brass instruments often play in that key. F major is usually quite Christmassy. etc.Regarding the saddest key, i think C minor is absolutely crushing. All i need to hear is that Eb, D, C and it gets me in a way that no other key does.D minor doesn't sound sad as such, more really malevolent. For some reason i always think of a low D (either D1 or D2) which sounds really ominous.Of course, it does depend on context. The way in which a key is used contributes more to the song than the key itself.

Different keys have very different effects and generate different feelings, speaking from experience. For example, there are some tunes in A Minor that I like, but they are rare. Put something in B or F Minor and I'm more likely to like it. Can't explain why.

So here's Schubert's characterizations of the keys roughly to modern tuning:\n\nC# Major\nCompletely Pure. Its character is: innocence, simplicity, naivety, children's talk.\n\nC# Minor\nDeclaration of love and at the same time the lament of unhappy love. All languishing, longing, sighing of the love-sick soul lies in this key.\n\nE Major\nA leering key, degenerating into grief and rapture. It cannot laugh, but it can smile; it cannot howl, but it can at least grimace its crying.--Consequently only unusual characters and feelings can be brought out in this key.\n\nD Minor\nPenitential lamentation, intimate conversation with God, the friend and help-meet of life; sighs of disappointed friendship and love lie in its radius.\n\nD# Major\nThe key of triumph, of Hallelujahs, of war-cries, of victory-rejoicing. Thus, the inviting symphonies, the marches, holiday songs and heaven-rejoicing choruses are set in this key.\n\nD# Minor\nMelancholy womanliness, the spleen and humors brood.\n\nF Major\nThe key of love, of devotion, of intimate conversation with God.\n\nE Minor\nFeelings of the anxiety of the soul's deepest distress, of brooding despair, of blackest depression, of the most gloomy condition of the soul. Every fear, every hesitation of the shuddering heart, breathes out of horrible D# minor. If ghosts could speak, their speech would approximate this key.\n\nF Major\nNoisy shouts of joy, laughing pleasure and not yet complete, full delight lies in E Major.\n\nF minor\nNaïve, womanly innocent declaration of love, lament without grumbling; sighs accompanied by few tears; this key speaks of the imminent hope of resolving in the pure happiness of C major. \n\nF# Major\nComplaisance & Calm.\n\nF# Minor\nDeep depression, funereal lament, groans of misery and longing for the grave.\n\nG Major\nTriumph over difficulty, free sigh of relief uttered when hurdles are surmounted; echo of a soul which has fiercely struggled and finally conquered lies in all uses of this key.\n\nG Minor\nA gloomy key: it tugs at passion as a dog biting a dress. Resentment and discontent are its language.\n\nG# Major\nEverything rustic, idyllic and lyrical, every calm and satisfied passion, every tender gratitude for true friendship and faithful love,--in a word every gentle and peaceful emotion of the heart is correctly expressed by this key.\n\nG# Minor \nDiscontent, uneasiness, worry about a failed scheme; bad-tempered gnashing of teeth; in a word: resentment and dislike.\n\nA Major\nKey of the grave. Death, grave, putrefaction, judgment, eternity lie in its radius.\n\nA Minor\nGrumbler, heart squeezed until it suffocates; wailing lament, difficult struggle; in a word, the color of this key is everything struggling with difficulty.\n\nA# Major\nThis key includes declarations of innocent love, satisfaction with one's state of affairs; hope of seeing one's beloved again when parting; youthful cheerfulness and trust in God.\n\nA# minor\nPious womanliness and tenderness of character.\n\nB Major\nCheerful love, clear conscience, hope aspiration for a better world.\n\nB minor\nA quaint creature, often dressed in the garment of night. It is somewhat surly and very seldom takes on a pleasant countenance. Mocking God and the world; discontented with itself and with everything; preparation for suicide sounds in this key.\n\nC Major\nStrongly colored, announcing wild passions, composed from the most glaring colors. Anger, rage, jealousy, fury, despair and every burden of the heart lies in its sphere.\n\nC Minor\nThis is as it were the key of patience, of calm awaiting one's fate and of submission to divine dispensation.

Some sad keys are Eb, C#, and F#. I don't know how D is called the saddest key when C# can make some of the most depressing stuff (Holy Mountains by System Of A Down, Tentative by System Of A Down, Killpop by Slipknot for some example)

This is very interesting as Hans Zimmers favourite key is D as he uses a lot of low strings e.g. Cellos in the jokers theme 'Why so serious' whilst the lowest note on the cello is C its an open string so you cant vibrato on it so going one tone up allows for a much more expressive lowest note and that is how he chooses his keys.
Tomas Tur
I can say for sure that one of the saddest keys is the one you left inside the car.

Well temperament is a good compromise if you want to keep all the key centers useable without sacrificing uniqueness between them.\n\nPersonally I've been experimenting with Pythagorean tuning. VERY useful if you know how to exploit those dissonant Major chords

Basically the idea of a sad or happy key on today's music isn't true because we use true temperament, right?\nBut as far as i know guitars doesn't have true temperament (there are true temperament frets, the ones that looks like they are broken, but i'm talking about regular guitars), so the idea of a sad or happy key could be applied?\nAlso, how did you change the temperament of your keyboard?
