Argh. There's a picture of Rosetta Tharpe but no mention? She was distorting guitar as early as 1944 that we have records of. It's out on youtube and sounds amazing. Also, Rocket 88 was 1949, not 1951, and while it was recorded as \

Jack White sucks and is overrated man. His guitar playing is sloppy and his tone sounds awful. He sounds out of tune too. His production sucks too.\n\nI guess this is what makes something 'artistic' nowadays.
Creatotron
did you sell your soul to put this up with no copyright strikes or something
Dante Escalante
All I want is a rickenbacker bass with distortion ...
David Niles
I find it unfortunate that Clapton with John Mayall wasn't even mentioned. That sound was unique and everyone wanted to copy it. Les Paul + Marshall = ROCK. \nAs far as the Kinks go, \
Dean Nilvalli
If you are worried about copy right issues, regarding having longer bits of music, I am pretty sure that fair use clauses make this safe. You are clearly using the music in another context for another purpose.

I can't belive you've missed Johnny Burnette Trio. From wikipedia:\

For really early sleazy guitars, listen to Milton Brown and his Brownies Somebody's Been Using That Thing from 1936 or T Texas Tyler & His Oklahoma Melody Boys - Guitar Boogie Woogie from 1946 or Bob Wills - Steel Guitar Rag from 1936. Those country western swing musicians are sadly unrecognized. Finally, someone is giving Junior Barnard credit, finally. He's the one playing on Bob Wills version of Ida Red which helped Chuck Berry model his style and write Maybelline.

It’s worth noting that most guitarists still used valve amps until very recently. It’s only recent devices like the Line 6 Helix, Fractal AxeFX, Kemper Profiler and Positive Grid’s Bias software have really been able to replicate the sound of overdriven Valves authentically. Valve is still preferred by most, although the practicality of digital devices mean they’re constantly becoming more popular.
Juan Ayestas
Glad to see you demystify the fact the kinks weren't the creators of distortion.

Jimmy Page played on a lot of the studio sessions of early 60's songs listed here. He had Roger Mayer build a fuzz box for him long before he went to work for Hendrix. Page wanted a sound like the guitar on a song by The Ventures' 2000 Pound Bee. He was one of the pioneers of fuzz tone on songs by The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, etc. Look it up.

I had a Maestro Distortion pedal. I learned that it sounded better when it was warm, so I put a christmas light in it and left it cracked on the back where the battery was, so the wire could come out. The bulb burnt out one day so I bought another Christmas light to put in it. That night on stage it quit. I didn't know that those lights came in different wattages and I had gotten a HOT one and it fried my pedal:) It sounded best just before it burnt up:) I was 14 yrs old and it was 1965:)

This is a nice dissertation, however you guys left out a really important, and very early, example of amp distortion. The Gibson EH-150 amp (made from 34-37) was a 15 watt all-tube amp with 1-12 that they made for bluesman Charlie Christian. Charlie asked them to include a channel for a microphone so he could sing as well as play through the amp. In those days the mic signal was very weak so Gibson put a boost circuitry into the mic channel. The legend goes that Hubert Sumlin was backing Howling Wolf one night and accidentally plugged his guitar into the mic channel of his EH-150. When you do that, you get a very classic sounding overdrive/distortion. Everyone in the bar was shocked at the sound and, after the song was completed, Wolf told Sumlin \

Sun Records museum says Ike Turner dropped his amp loading in and it's tattered speaker caused distortion and since it sounded good Ike recorded the first recording of distortion so I was told in a tout of Sun records, same place Elvis, Cash, Perkins, Lewis and many others recorded.
